Christmas at NYBG
Christmas at NYBG
New York Botanical Garden is located in Bronx. Considering the location and traffic, it is hardly attractive enough for us to visit, especially in winter. When we heard that they have a special holiday train show we thought that our 4-year-old might be interested and decided to pay a visit. I didn't have much expectation at first but soon realized that I was totally wrong.

It is somewhat misleading to say that this is a train show. The show began from 1992 with the idea to construct replicas of landmark buildings and famous architectures in New York City to decorate the train show along the rail. The whole setting is located within the green house integrated with the flowers and plants there.

Doesn't sound exciting enough, does it ? What if the materials used in constructing the replicas are limited to botanical and natural materials such as leaves, twigs, bark, berries, pine cones and cinnamon sticks ?

Although the green house of NYBG is huge, it is still not big enough for that many visitors. The train show is at the end of the visiting route with these buildings facing the entrance. You can see Rockefeller Center at right, Chrysler building behind it and St Patrick's Cathedral at lower left.

Closer look at the top of Chrysler building and Empire State Building. Can you figure out what they were made of ?
Prometheus
Prometheus
You probably won't notice that they also replicated the Prometheus statue on the foot of Rockefeller Center. It is so cool, right ? The statue was made of tree fungus, eucalyptus leaves, grapevine, acorn tops, moss and metal leaf.

The "original" Prometheus is here.
Statue of Liberty
Statue of Liberty
You must be able to recognize this one.
New York City Hall

I am so impressed on the creativity and their knowledge on the natural materials. By using specific materials they are able to recreate the color and texture of the original building. Although it's almost impossible to faithfully replicate one hundred percent of the original, they did recreate the statues or the decoration panels of the building in such a creative way that you have to agree that they are genius.

Guggenheim Museum
Guggenheim Museum
Most New Yorker can tell immediately that the architecture on the right is Washington Arch. However, I bet that most can't figure out the name of the building on the left. At first I was wondering what were the big fungus doing here until I saw the name plate : Guggenheim Museum. I have been laughing for at least 30 seconds.
Metropolitan Museum
Metropolitan Museum
The Metropolitan Museum here looks much more serious than the replica of Guggenheim Museum.
