Congaree Swamp National Park is home of large hardwood forest. It is the largest intact tract
of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the United States. Despite the word
"Swamp" in its name, the park is more accurately described as a floodplain. A swamp contains
water almost year-round, while a floodplain forest experiences wet and dry periods as the river
that controls it rises and falls with seasonal rains.
