Cuyahoga Valley National Park Map
To be honest, I have no idea how this place got upgraded to National Park designation. According to NPS site, it was a National Recreation Area since 1974 and National Park since 2000. I would say that it is more like a recreation area than national park. However, earning the national park designation must have benifited the park with more federal budget. The park has 4 visitor centers. All of them close at 4:00 PM and only one visitor center (Canal Visitor Center) opens 7 days a week. We tried hard to locate them by the map but ran out of luck with the fourth one. When trying to find the Peninsula Depot visitor center we asked the shopkeepers nearby and none knew that it was just next door. Fortunately we saw a park ranger passing by and got the information we needed.

"Shops ?" you asked. Yes, and there is even a full golf course inside the national park.

I really don't know how to describe this park. We took a short walk along the Towpath Trail nearby the Peninsula Depot/Lock 29 as well as Boston Store and we have also driven along the scenic drive. My impression from a half-day visit was that the canal is not as beautiful as the Raritan Canal nearby Princeton, New Jersey and the country scene is probably just as good as some small towns in New England.

Got the picture ? I feel lucky that we were just passing by this park.

Activity Suggestion
Hiking and bicycling are the most popuklar activities in the park. It is very comfortable walking along the street or trail. The best thing to do here is probably bicycling along the Towpath Trail. You can rent bikes from the shops nearby Peninsula Depot if you don't carry your own. This link has Information about Towpath Trail

Another activity recommended by locals is riding on the scenic railroad, although I do doubt whether you can see more than driving. We didn't try but here is a link you can get information about Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
